BATON ROUGE – The 2008 Louisiana State Individual Income Tax filing deadline is Friday, May 15, 2009.
May 15 is also the deadline for requesting a state extension to file the 2008 individual income tax return.
If you need additional time to file your 2008 Louisiana individual income tax return, you will need to either request a specific state individual income tax filing extension OR submit a paper copy of your Federal extension, Form 4868. Regardless of which option is used, all extension requests must be made on or before the tax return's due date, May 15th for calendar year filers, and the 15th day of the fifth month following the close of the taxable year for fiscal year filers.
Extensions may be requested by:
• Filing a paper state extension, Form R-2868 (Application for Extension of Time to File Louisiana Individual Income Tax), which is available on the Department of Revenue's web site at www.revenue.louisiana.gov;
• Filing an extension request electronically via Louisiana File Online, the Department of Revenue's free online tax filing application at www.revenue.louisiana.gov; OR
• Submitting a paper copy of the IRS extension, Form 4868 (Federal Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return);
Federal and state extensions may be faxed to the Department of Revenue at 225-231-6211 or mailed to:

Copies of federal extension requests that are simply attached to state tax returns when filed will not be accepted.
Filing an extension does not grant a taxpayer extra time to pay the tax due. Payments received after the due date will be charged applicable penalties and interest.
Estimated payments can be made electronically via Louisiana File Online.
