Filing Sales Taxes Electronically Popular With Businesses

New Internet option is quick and easy from Revenue''s web page

April 19, 2001

BATON ROUGE - More and more businesses are discovering the ease and speed of filing their monthly or quarterly state sales tax returns through the Internet from a personal computer. The new option offered by the Louisiana Department of Revenue also allows Internet sales tax filers the option to pay their sales taxes by Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT), eliminating the need to mail a check.

"We introduced this new option for filing sales tax in October 2000," says Revenue Secretary Cynthia Bridges. "Reporting and paying state taxes are important responsibilities," she points out, "and one of the Department''s goals is to make reporting and paying those taxes as simple and easy as possible." Bridges says paying business taxes through EFT has been available for several years. Internet filers of sales tax may elect to use EFT as their method of payment, but it is not required unless monthly payments are $20,000 or more.

"Internet filing of sales taxes is wonderful!" says Emmita Templet of LeBlanc''s Pay-Less Supermarkets in Gonzales, Plattenville, and Paincourtville. "It''s the best thing that''s happened because it saves the trouble of manually filling out a paper sales tax return and then making sure it''s mailed on time. And another good thing is that the program automatically calculates everything for you. It really is simple," she says.

Jane Brashier of Gas Utility District 2 near Clinton in East Feliciana Parish agrees that filing the district''s sales taxes through the Internet is easy. "I''ve filed through the Internet twice so far and there''s been absolutely no problem," she says. "We are in a rural area and when I filed a paper return that had to be mailed, I always worried that the mail would not be delivered on time. This option definitely saves time and worry."

Nancy Brown of Tool City Sales, Inc., in Ruston agrees with what other Internet filers are saying. "It''s quick, easy, and really simple," she says. "The program automatically calculates the tax for you, so it really is simple. We''re not set up yet to pay by EFT, but now at least, all I have to worry about is making sure the check is mailed on time."
