Parish E-File collects $1 billion in sales taxes for state and local governments

March 3, 2010

BATON ROUGE – Parish E-File.com, the Louisiana Department of Revenue’s online sales tax collection service, has collected more than $1 billion in state and local sales and use taxes, the agency reported Wednesday. Parish E-File.com (www.parishe-file.com) is a free web application that allows businesses to file sales and use tax returns and remit taxes entirely online.

“Making the sales and use tax process more business-friendly was the main reason for our investment in developing Parish E-File,” said Secretary of Revenue Cynthia Bridges. “The ability to file returns and remit taxes through this secure, easy to use online portal saves time and money for business owners.”

Parish E-File.com is especially useful for businesses that operate in multiple locations throughout the state. Instead of filing monthly paper returns in every parish where they do business, they can handle the entire sales tax process with the click of a mouse.

“It has made paperwork a lot easier,” said Steve Lambousy, Chief Financial Officer of Shop Rite, Inc., which operates 39 stores in 15 parishes. “We pay hundreds of thousands of dollars a month in sales taxes, and Parish E-File reduces errors and makes it easier to track payments. It’s nice not having to file paper returns in local jurisdictions around the state anymore.”

Since its launch in August, 2008, through February, 2010, Parish E-File.com collected $1,067,268,979 for the State of Louisiana and for local taxing authorities throughout the state. The state received nearly $240 million of the total, with nearly $830 million remitted to parish and local governments.

Parish E-File.com is a collaborative effort of the Louisiana Department of Revenue and its community partners, including:

• Louisiana Municipal Association
• Police Jury Association of Louisiana
• Louisiana School Boards Association
• Society of Louisiana Certified Public Accountants
• Louisiana Association of Tax Administrators
• Louisiana Retailers Association
• Louisiana Association of Business and Industry

Act 73 of the 2003 Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature enabled the creation of a uniform electronic local return and remittance system for sales and use taxes.
