Mardi Gras Reminder:

ATC to Strictly Enforce Underage Drinking Laws

January 31, 2001

BATON ROUGE - Office of Alcohol and Tobacco Control Commissioner Murphy Painter says underage drinking laws will be strictly enforced during all activities associated with the state''s upcoming Mardi Gras season.

"As in past years, ATC agents will be out in force at all Mardi Gras activities in the state and will strictly enforce the underage drinking laws," Painter says. "No one under the age of 21 is allowed to possess or consume alcoholic beverages unless they are in the presence of a parent or legal guardian," Painter adds.

Painter says possession of alcohol by an underage person is a criminal offense that is punishable by up to a $500 fine and six months in jail. He stresses that there is no exception in the law for the sake of Mardi Gras.
