Electronic tax filing increases 57 percent with Louisiana File Online

February 18, 2010

BATON ROUGE – The number of state tax returns filed electronically in 2010 is up 57 percent over the same period in 2009, the Louisiana Department of Revenue (LDR) reported Thursday.

Louisiana File Online, LDR’s free tax filing web application, has recorded 24,224 returns so far in the first month-and-a-half of 2010. By the same time last year, 15,413 returns had come in through Louisiana File Online.

“We are pleased to see that so many Louisiana taxpayers, resident and non-resident alike, are discovering the speed and convenience offered by online filing,” said Secretary of Revenue Cynthia Bridges.

In addition to simplifying the process, online filing also allows taxpayers to receive their refunds more quickly.

“With Louisiana File Online, many taxpayers are receiving their refunds within 14 days,” Bridges said. “With paper filing, the average wait is 6 to 8 weeks.”

With Louisiana File Online, taxpayers can manage many different aspects of their accounts, including:

• Paying taxes electronically
• Checking the status of a refund
• Amending prior-year tax returns
• Uploading supporting materials, such as receipts and other scanned documents
