Prepaid wireless service fee takes effect January 1, 2010

November 30, 2009

A two-percent fee on prepaid wireless service goes into effect on January 1, 2010.

Act 531 of the Regular Session of the 2009 Louisiana Legislature created this fee to help fund 911 emergency phone services in Louisiana.

It applies to all prepaid wireless communication that can access 911.

Retailers who sell prepaid wireless must collect the two-percent service charge at the time of purchase.

The law requires them to file returns and remit the fees on a quarterly basis.

The Department of Revenue advises retailers to register in advance of the January 1, 2010 effective date of Act 531.
