Louisiana Department of Revenue Extends Tax Filing Deadlines to Match Recent IRS Changes

“Our objective here is simple… it is to continue our ongoing mission of relieving taxpayers of unnecessary worry and burden in managing their tax responsibilities.” Said Cynthia Bridges, Secretary of the Louisiana Department of Revenue in announcing the department’s postponement of tax deadlines in areas affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Individual and business taxpayers in the most severely damaged parishes will now have through August 28th, 2006 to file income returns and make certain tax payments that had a due date or extended due date on or after August 29, 2005. Individual, corporation income and franchise, partnership and fiduciary tax returns qualify for the extension. Additional information can be obtained by visiting the department’s website at

The automatic postponement will apply to taxpayers in the following Louisiana parishes:
Cameron, Jefferson, Orleans, Plaquemines, St. Bernard, St. Charles, and St. Tammany. Taxpayers participating in this extension are asked to print “Hurricane Katrina” or Hurricane Rita” with BLACK ink on the top of their Louisiana state return. To ensure that taxpayers outside the above areas who suffered severe hurricane damage get necessary relief from filing and payment deadlines, LDR requires that these taxpayers identify themselves as mentioned above.

Secretary Bridges added that, “Obviously such revenues are an important part of the recovery of our beloved state of Louisiana. However, our goal is to be an increasingly customer service friendly resource for taxpayers especially in this period of uncertainty when Louisiana residents and businesses are experiencing such uncommon hardships.”

The Louisiana Department of Revenue’s mission is to administer the applicable tax laws of the state of Louisiana as well as regulations concerning alcohol, tobacco and charitable gaming.
